Passenger association pitches for daily service between Mettupalayam and Tirunelveli, restoration of stoppage at Thiruthangal
The Podanur Train Users’ Association has petitioned Southern Railways to upgrade the weekly Tirunvelveli-Mettupalayam Special Fare Express to a daily service and reinstate its stop at Thiruthangal. Additionally, the association requested a new daily train from Coimbatore to Tiruchendur or the extension of the Mettupalayam-Tuticorin Express to Tiruchendur. The Podanur Train Users’ Association has urged the Southern Railways to regularise Tirunvelveli-Mettupalayam-Tirunvelveli Special Fare Express from weekly to a regular daily train and restore stoppage at Thiruthangal.
In a petition to the Divsional Railway Manager of Southern Railway, N. Subramanian, Association general secretary, said there was a growing demand for conversion of the train into a daily service from passengers of Coimbatore as well as major towns including Pollachi, Udumalpet, Palani, Dindigul, and major towns and cities in the Southern districts.
The train will be patronised by several thousands of passengers in the Western and Southern districts, and will promote education, healthcare, tourism and business sectors, Mr. Subramanian said, highlighting the revenue the service would generate for the Railways.
The Thiruthangal stoppage that was stopped during the COVID pandemic has to be restored, the petition emphasised.
