Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure highlights major gaps in road-safety system
Namibia's Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure has identified critical road safety issues, including roaming livestock and high-fatality corridors like the B1 road. The committee recommends urgent interventions such as improved fencing, reflective animal gear, and enhanced traffic enforcement.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure has highlighted several challenges on Namibia’s roads that are contributing to the risk of accidents, including inadequate traffic capacity in certain areas and livestock on public roads.
According to the Committee’s report, roaming livestock remains one of the most widespread road-safety concerns across several regions. In the Kavango West Region, livestock was identified as the leading contributor to road accidents, accounting for nearly 51% of all recorded accidents. Similar concerns were reported in other regions, including Hardap, Omaheke and Omusati. The Committee stressed that the issue requires urgent intervention.
“The Committee further recommends that the Ministry strengthen controls relating to livestock on public roads, including clear responsibilities for livestock owners, secure fencing in high-risk areas and the use of highly visible reflective collars, tags or reflectors on animals to improve night-time visibility,” the report added.
