Parliamentary panel visits HMT Kalamassery unit
A Parliamentary Committee on Government Assurances visited the HMT unit in Kalamassery to assess its potential for revival. The committee plans to submit a formal report to the Lok Sabha with recommendations for the struggling public sector undertaking.
Why it matters
The potential revival of HMT is a significant economic issue for the region and highlights government efforts to manage state-owned enterprises.
The Parliamentary Committee on Government Assurances has promised to submit a report with recommendations to expedite the revival of the Hindustan Machine tools (HMT), Kalamassery unit, Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden said on Monday (October 5, 2026).
The committee, headed by Harendra Singh Malik, inspected the HMT unit on Monday following a sitting of the panel held in Kottayam on Saturday (October 3, 2026). The committee informed the MP that it would submit a report to the Lok Sabha incorporating its findings and recommend measures to the concerned Union ministries and authorities to speed up the revival process, Mr. Eden said in a statement.
Mr. Eden said the proceedings were part of the follow-up action on an assurance given by the Union government in response to a question raised by him in the Lok Sabha on February 4, 2025, regarding the cash-strapped public sector undertaking (PSU).
