KARACHI: Pakistan’s Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Monday announced his ministry’s plans to establish a 400-acre apparel zone at Karachi’s Port Qasim, saying that its first phase was expected to create over 138,000 jobs and generate annual exports of around $2.2 billion. </p>
The minister was chairing a meeting on the proposed project at Port Qasim, one of the country’s largest seaports. Port Qasim says on its website that it has the largest industrial zone of Pakistan, spread over 15474 acres, and has more than 400 industrial and commercial units in operation. Port Qasim says it is one of the largest contributors to Pakistan’s national economy, handling 51 percent of the country’s sea trade. </p>
