PA snaps at ANC’s heels as DA dominates Western Cape
Early municipal election results in South Africa's Western Cape show the Democratic Alliance (DA) maintaining a strong lead. Meanwhile, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) is challenging the African National Congress (ANC) for second place in the province.
Why it matters
The shifting power dynamics in the Western Cape could significantly impact future coalition negotiations within the Government of National Unity.
Pinelands residents community came in their numbers to cast their votes for the local government elections at Pinelands Primary School on Wednesday.
If early results in the municipal elections are anything to go by, the DA is set to tighten its grip on councils across the Western Cape, while the ANC risks being pushed into third place by the Patriotic Alliance (PA) in a province it once governed.
With 32% of voting districts counted by Thursday morning, the DA had 56.51% of the vote across the province, according to results flighted at the IEC’s Western Cape results operation centre.
The ANC had 11.67%, with Gayton McKenzie’s PA less than a percentage point behind on 10.79%.
The ANC last governed the Western Cape in 2009, and the early numbers point to a further slide for the party in the province.
