Over three-and-a-half months after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) bagged 12 of the 13 seats in the Assembly elections in Kozhikode district of Keralam, a controversy has broken out over a statement by Koyilandy MLA and district Congress committee (DCC) president K. Praveenkumar related to the defeat of P.V. Anvar, the UDF-backed Independent, in Beypore.
P.A. Mohamed Riyas, former Minister and a State secretariat member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), had emerged victorious from the constituency with a margin of 7,487 votes. It was Mr. Riyas’ second Assembly poll win from there. In the 2021 elections, he had defeated the UDF’s P.M. Niyas by a margin of 28,747 votes.
