What does affordable housing mean for an ordinary Ugandan? Affordable housing is not simply about finding the cheapest house. It is about having a decent home that you can afford without putting your entire income under pressure.
In Uganda, we have to look at the whole picture: the cost of land, construction, financing, utilities and even transport to work. A house may be cheap to build, but if it is extremely far from where you work and you spend a large part of your income on transport. We also need to question whether it is truly affordable.
