Blizzard Entertainment is introducing a new mech-based hero, D.Mon, to the game Overwatch, aiming to differentiate her playstyle from the existing hero D.Va. While both share a background as esports champions, D.Mon is designed as a melee-focused tank compared to D.Va's shooter-based mechanics.
Why it matters
This illustrates the design challenges in maintaining character identity and gameplay variety in long-running competitive multiplayer games.
Overwatch ’s D.Va, one of the original and arguably most iconic heroes in the game’s roster, is quite the tough act to follow, but that’s just what the game’s next hero has to do.
