Over 70% of Chennai’s stormwater drains to be desilted by September-end: GCC
The Greater Chennai Corporation is working to desilt over 70% of the city's stormwater drain network by the end of September. The project involves thousands of roads and catch-pits, supported by a ₹100 crore allocation for monsoon preparedness.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has completed desilting 493.83 km (29.42%) of the 1,671.6-km stormwater drain network taken up through contracts as of August 28, 2026. Work is under way along 77.29 km (4.62%), while that along 1,109.2 km (65.94%) remains to be taken up.
Tiruvottiyur has recorded the highest physical progress at 57.43%, followed by Sholinganallur at 54.87% and Alandur at 46.41%. Anna Nagar has recorded 37.94%, followed by Madhavaram (34.71%), Perungudi (30.73%), Manali (30.69%), Valasaravakkam (28.64%), Ambattur (28.56%), Adyar (24.98%), and Royapuram (22.08%). Thiru Vi Ka Nagar has recorded 17.01%, the lowest among the zones.
The desilting work covers 8,252 roads through 101 packages, of which 2,351 roads have been completed, while work is in progress on 389 roads. Work on a total of 43,614 machine holes has also been completed.
