Over 11,600 Displaced in Konso Appeal for Emergency Aid

(Toronto, Canada) — Over 11,600 displaced people from Konso , South Ethiopia, are in a critical situation and pleading for emergency aid.

They were displaced last week on the eve of the Ethiopian New Year after armed groups launched attacks in Kolme district’s Kurbo, Masoya, and Borqara localities. Five people were killed and four others wounded when gunmen claimed “their cattle were stolen.”

Konso zone is one of the areas in Ethiopia where there has been a recurring security crisis related to gunmen attacks.

According to a DW Amharic report, over 1,900 households were displaced. Seventy-five houses and two schools were entirely torched.

Those displaced are currently residing in neighboring villages within the zone. Pregnant women, children, and the elderly are among the displaced population.

The source reported that they are facing severe circumstances, stating they have not received emergency food aid or provided shelter.
