OU student leader detained ahead of protest against Delhi police crackdown

A student leader at Osmania University was briefly detained by police ahead of a protest organized by a Women and Transgender collective. While police claimed the student was only called for questioning, the student alleged he was held as a preventive measure against his activism.
Why it matters
The incident underscores ongoing tensions regarding student activism and the limits of police preventive detention in India.
A student leader from Osmania University was detained on Thursday morning ahead of the day-long protest near Dharna Chowk in Indira Park by Women and Transgender JAC marking the continuing solidarity protests in Hyderabad against the Delhi police’s crackdown on CJP protesters earlier this week. The protest was organised peacefully.
“This protest is not just about students. It is about their future. I have come here to express solidarity with them,” said Dr. Suhas Mareedu, who turned up at the protest with a poster demanding end to commercialisation of education and making it accessible to all. Other students brought paper and sketch pens to draw and paint commentary about the state of affairs in the country.
Earlier in the day, Mahipal, a student affiliated with the Disha Students Organisation, was picked up near the university campus in the morning and later released.
