Oromia’s Six New Regions: The Final Dagger in the Heart of Oromummaa

This article argues that the Oromummaa political doctrine in Ethiopia is failing as the creation of six new regions exposes the lack of organic support for pan-Oromo cultural institutions like Gadaa. The author contends that these cultural concepts were political inventions that have lost their influence in contemporary discourse.
Why it matters
It provides critical insight into the shifting political landscape and ethnic federalism dynamics within Ethiopia.
In several articles, I have argued that contemporary political invocations of Gadaa, Oromummaa, and Irreechaa are politically motivated and futile projects aimed at establishing a pan-Oromia hegemony. Subsequent developments have vindicated my argument on all three counts.
For an in-depth analysis, read my November 2025 article titled “Oromummaa’s Adulteration of Waaqeffanna, Gadaa, and Irreechaa Is Tearing the Oromo Fabric Apart.” The article predicted the collapse of Oromummaa under the weight of fabricated culture and fictitious claims to indigenous democracy.
