OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Microsoft Word, expanding native integration across Office suite

OpenAI has released ChatGPT for Microsoft Word, allowing users to draft, edit, summarize, and format documents directly within the word processor interface. Rolled out globally across all subscription tiers—including the Free tier—the integration operates via an embedded sidebar, enabling professionals to convert raw notes into structured proposals, rewrite sections for specific audiences, and ask direct analytical questions about open documents.
The deployment relies on the unified ChatGPT Microsoft add-in available on the Microsoft Marketplace, which also powers OpenAI's existing integrations for Excel and PowerPoint. Workspace administrators can manage organizational access through the ChatGPT admin console, with OpenAI confirming that Word integration will be enabled by default for enterprise users starting October 1, 2026. The Word extension also supports custom "Skills" and integrations with productivity hubs like SharePoint, Outlook, Google Workspace, and Dropbox to pull external context into document workflows.
