OpenAI IPO won't happen this year, says Sam Altman

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed that the company will not pursue an IPO this year, citing a focus on safety and alignment. This follows a broader industry trend where leaders are calling for a slowdown in the AI development race.
Why it matters
Signals a shift in the AI industry's priorities from rapid commercialization to safety and regulatory cooperation.
“I actually think that, given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public, and we don’t feel pressure on that,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Fortune .
“We got a lot of stuff to do, like meeting this moment of what is going to be required for safety and alignment, and how the industry and governments can work together,” he continued.
The news comes as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei publicly called for a slowdown in the AI race on Saturday — with both Altman and Elon Musk quickly agreeing.
