Why it matters
The ongoing conflict between opposition parties and the Election Commission of India highlights significant political instability and concerns regarding civil liberties.
Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leaders vowed to continue protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Addressing the media on Sunday (October 11, 2026), after they were released from detention, CJP’s co-convener and spokesperson said, “In the entire country, there is an open emergency-like situation.”
Mr. Das said that after being detained on Saturday (October 10, 2026), the police didn’t allow them to talk to their lawyers. He said that they were worried that their phones would have been hacked and evidence planted after the police seized them on Saturday (October 10, 2026). He also claimed that a seizure memo was not given to them after the police took their phones.
Mr. Das said, “We appeal to all citizens; you’ll have to come out to the streets and protest peacefully wherever you are.”
