Police said a protest-like situation evolved near the house of Kannanallur village panchayat president S. Maharajan on Thamaraikulam south street on Friday evening following erratic drinking water supply to the residents.
One of the affected residents Esakkiappan, 40, of the same street picked-up a heated argument with pump operator Shankar in this connection. When Maharajan arrived at the spot and tried to pacify them, Esakkiyappan quarrelled with the panchayat president.

With head injury, Maharajan was rushed to a private hospital in Parapadi. After examining the condition of the victim, the doctors there referred him to the Nanguneri Government Hospital. However, the doctors in the government hospital declared him ‘brought dead’.
