First Lady of Nigeria Oluremi Tinubu has called on policymakers and society to protect the teaching profession, improve teachers’ welfare and elevate their status. Mrs Tinubu made the call in her message to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, commemorated on Monday under the theme “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Futures”. She said teachers played a critical role in national development by shaping minds, nurturing dreams and preparing future generations to build a better world. “On this World Teachers’ Day 2026, commemorated under the theme ‘Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Futures’, we celebrate the contributions of teachers to national development,” the First Lady said. She urged policymakers and the wider society to sustain efforts aimed at strengthening the teaching profession and improving the welfare and standing of teachers.
