Chinyere 'Chichi' Ukeje, a 25-year-old from Philadelphia, won a $300,000 NASA prize for her 'Adaptive Nourishment Infrastructure' project. Her innovation focuses on providing nutritious, home-like meals for astronauts on Mars using portable heating technology.
Why it matters
Innovative food systems are essential for the success of long-duration human space exploration missions to Mars.
Chinyere "Chichi" Ukeje, a 25-year-old from Philadelphia, won the $300,000 top prize in a NASA competition aimed at creating food systems for astronauts in space and on Mars.
Originally from Bowie, Md., Ukeje, who now lives in Northeast Philadelphia with her husband, proposed a project called Adaptive Nourishment Infrastructure (ANI), named after the Nigerian goddess of harvest and fertility.
Ukeje's innovative winning idea involved astronauts using portable electric lunch boxes to heat food. They would take nutritious food cubes and turn them into everyday meals, allowing for fun themed dinners like "taco night" or "Italian pasta night."
"You want them to feel at home when they are millions of miles from home," she told the Philadelphia Inquirer .
