Okkiyam Maduvu Canal widening improves water flow ahead of monsoon: Chennai Corporation
The Greater Chennai Corporation has widened the Okkiyam Maduvu Canal to 98 metres to improve drainage capacity ahead of the Northeast monsoon. Commissioner G.S. Sameeran inspected the site to ensure construction works are completed on time.

Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Commissioner G.S. Sameeran on Thursday (October 1, 2026) inspected ongoing stormwater drain works in Adyar and Sholinganallur zones, being undertaken as part of precautionary measures ahead of the Northeast monsoon.
During the inspection, the Commissioner reviewed stormwater drain works being carried out near Tidel Park in Zone 13 (Adyar), where Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is undertaking construction activities. The drainage project is being executed to provide connectivity to the Buckingham Canal. Dr. Sameeran examined the progress of the works and instructed officials to expedite their completion.
