Oilers F Hyman could miss a couple weeks; Nugent-Hopkins placed on IR
The Edmonton Oilers are managing multiple roster setbacks, with Zach Hyman sidelined for two weeks and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins placed on injured reserve. The team is also dealing with long-term injuries to Matt Savoie and Alec Regula.
Why it matters
Significant roster depletion early in the season forces teams to rely on depth players, which can drastically alter team strategy and season outcomes.
Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman did not travel with the team to Vancouver, and could miss a couple of weeks with an injury, per TSN’s Ryan Rishaug. As Rishaug reports, the injury may have occurred during the Oilers’ final pre-season game against the Calgary Flames on Saturday. Hyman played 20:33 in the Oilers’ 6-5 loss to the Canucks on Tuesday, where he recorded three shots and two hits and finished with a +1 rating. Hyman is playing in his sixth season in Edmonton after starting his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 12th-year player scored 31 goals and finished with 52 points in 58 games last season, adding two goals in six games in the postseason.
