A conservation effort in Ross County, Ohio, could significantly expand protection around a rare wetland complex if funding is secured for a proposed 118-acre land acquisition. The Ross County Park District is seeking to acquire the property, which would provide a buffer around the Kinnikinnick Fen and Herron Downs nature preserve properties as well as Kinnikinnick Creek. According to the Scioto Valley Guardian, which obtained the information from the Ross County Board of Commissioners, Ross County commissioners voted on September 8 to formally support the acquisition. If the project receives funding through Ohio’s Clean Ohio program, the preserved habitat could eventually grow to an estimated 450 acres.
