The Departments of Revenue and Geology and Mines, and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board have stepped up vigil to monitor the functioning of stone quarries in the district.

According to sources, there are about 70 quarries in the district. Except for a few, most of them are are functioning in private landholdings. Some quarries, which were given conditional lease licences by the Geology and Mines Department, have been inoperative.

Collector C. Muthukumaran made surprise visits recently to various quarries in the district to check whether they were following the rules and regulations stipulated by the Department of Geology and Mines and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. He checked whether the quarries mined beyond the permitted level. Similarly, he reviewed the adherence of safety rules and environmental regulations.
