Odisha: Experts meet to draft national guidelines, strategy for prevention of MASLD in India

Medical experts in India have convened to draft national guidelines for the prevention of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The initiative aims to address the rising prevalence of fatty liver disease in India by focusing on public health interventions, lifestyle changes, and community-based strategies.

BHUBANESWAR: Leading experts in gastroenterology and hepatology, led by Prof SP Singh, convened a meeting in the capital city recently to finalise the national guidelines for prevention of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).The expert meeting, under the aegis of Indian National Association for the Study of the Liver (INASL), focused on developing a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for preventing MASLD at both the individual and community levels. The deliberations included the burden of MASLD in India, India-specific risk factors and phenotypes, healthy dietary practices, physical activity, obesity and weight management, alcohol and tobacco use, screening strategies and prevention among high-risk individuals.The proposed guidelines also emphasised the importance of public health interventions and community-based prevention along with strategies to address the growing influence of unhealthy food environments and industry practices.
