‘Obvious weakness’: Zelenskyy slams Trump’s Russian diesel deal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticized potential US policy shifts regarding Russian sanctions, specifically warning against easing restrictions on petroleum products. He argues that such concessions are perceived as weakness and will only serve to prolong the conflict by funding further Russian military aggression.
Why it matters
This highlights the ongoing tension between international diplomatic efforts and Ukraine's security needs, signaling a potential rift in Western support strategies.
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday (local time) warned that easing sanctions against Russia without a clear and lasting de-escalation agreement would be an “obvious weakness” that could prolong the war by allowing Moscow to continue selling petroleum products. In a post on X, Zelenskyy said peace could not be achieved through weakness and called for stronger sanctions, continued support for Ukraine and sustained pressure on Moscow to end the war."Peace never comes through weakness. Today, representatives of the US Congress were in Kyiv – a bipartisan delegation – and I am grateful to them for visiting Ukraine at such a difficult time. They asked: what is needed to end the war? The answer must be strong. There must be sanctions under the Lindsey Graham bill, there must be support for Ukraine in protecting lives, and there must be pressure on Russia for its war.
