Nurse gets prison sentence over medication mishap causing death

As an additional penalty, the nurse has been banned from practising medicine for four years. However, the court decided not to award the 500,000 euros in compensation for non-pecuniary damage sought by the victim’s family. Judge Imants Dzenis explained that, having examined the case law cited by the defence, the court had concluded that awarding compensation for damages in these proceedings might be premature; therefore, the victims should be given the opportunity to claim compensation through civil proceedings.
