The number of nations with satellites in orbit has surged significantly over the past six decades, reaching 110 countries worldwide as of May 2026. This milestone marks a continuous, multi-decade expansion in global participation in space operations.

In 1960, satellite ownership was limited to fewer than five countries. Over the subsequent decades, national involvement expanded steadily.

By 1970, slightly more than ten nations had placed satellites into orbit, a total that grew to nearly 20 by 1980. By 1990, the figure had increased to approximately 26 countries.
