NPP urges President Mahama to fix ‘policy breakdown’ over Arabic and Chinese in public schools debate

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is urging President John Dramani Mahama to provide clarity over the government’s position on the proposed inclusion of Arabic and Chinese in Ghana’s school curriculum.

The call follows President Mahama’s recent statement that Cabinet has not approved any policy to introduce Arabic or Chinese as new subjects across Ghana’s public schools. The President said he chairs Cabinet and that no such curriculum had been presented for approval.

However, the NPP’s Education Sector Policy Committee says actions taken by the Education Ministry and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) suggest that preparations for the languages had already progressed.

According to the party, NaCCA engaged about 160 writers and reviewers to work on a revised curriculum, which was submitted to Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu on July 22, 2026.
