Noted economist Shabbar Zaidi calls for independent commission on K-Electric amid DISCO

Economist Shabbar Zaidi has proposed an independent commission to review the challenges facing K-Electric, citing concerns over regulatory uncertainty and the impact on Pakistan's broader power-sector privatization plans. The call comes amid ongoing legal and tariff disputes involving the utility company.
Why it matters
The stability of K-Electric is seen as a bellwether for the success of Pakistan's national energy privatization strategy and foreign investor confidence.
Former Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman and noted economist Shabbar Zaidi has called for the formation of an independent commission to examine the challenges facing K-Electric, warning that the experience of Pakistan's only privatised power utility carries important lessons for the government's plan to privatise electricity distribution companies.
In a post on X, Zaidi said KE was the country's only privatised energy company and had seen around $720 million in foreign investment but argued that the investment had generated no return for investors so far.
