Northland are one more Ranfurly Shield defence away from keeping the Log O’ Wood in the winterless Far North for the summer.
The Taniwha put away Waikato 34-17 in their second Shield defence in front of a passionate home crowd at Semenoff Stadium, shutting out the Mooloo men with a strong second half performance.
Northland move to second on the NPC table and face Counties Manukau in a fortnight with a chance to keep the Shield for the off-season.
The Taniwha ran in five tries and led 34-10 before Waikato scored a late consolation try.
