Northland captain Rivez Reihana has steered his side to a successful Ranfurly Shield defence with a gripping 20-10 win over Tasman in Whangārei.
A week after claiming the Log O’Wood from Canterbury – their first win against the 15-time NPC champions since 1999 and their first in Christchurch since 1987 – the Taniwha showed plenty of composure and resilience at Semenoff Stadium as a large crowd packed in to witness their first successful Shield defence since 1979.
The region has been in full party mode this week, but Northland were up for the challenge as they produced another impressive performance to underline their credentials as serious title contenders in this year’s NPC.
