North Island ‘best spot to be’ this weekend as south faces severe weather, warnings issued over 120km/h winds
The North Island of New Zealand is expected to experience mild, spring-like weather this weekend, while the South Island faces severe wind and rain warnings. Meteorologists have issued orange alerts for destructive 120km/h gales and heavy rainfall across several southern regions.

The North Island is set to bask in “spring-like” conditions and temperatures of 20C and higher this weekend as the south is hit by a fresh bout of severe weather.
MetService head of weather news Heather Keats said the North Island is “probably the best spot to be over the weekend”.
“We have got two weekends left of winter officially, if you run by meteorological seasons. So that is very good news,” Keats told Ryan Bridge TODAY .
“But the features that we’ve got coming over this weekend are actually quite spring-like. Spring-like temperatures, spring-like winds, spring-like rain.
“High pressure’s holding firm today and tomorrow. Sunday, there will be some showers making their way up to places like Auckland.”
Keats said some of “the tricky stuff” will be hitting the bottom part of the North Island and “all over” the South Island this weekend.
