North Industrial Area fire: AMA clears unauthorised structures at Kofikrom

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has cleared unauthorized structures in the North Industrial Area of Kofikrom to improve emergency access. The action follows a major fire where makeshift structures obstructed fire tenders and emergency vehicles.
Why it matters
The incident underscores the critical need for urban planning and the enforcement of safety regulations in industrial zones to protect public infrastructure.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly, with support from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, has removed unauthorised structures at Kofikrom in the North Industrial Area after occupants failed to comply with a May 29, 2026 directive to vacate the area.
The exercise, which intensified following a major fire that swept through the settlement and affected parts of Duraplast, targeted wooden structures and other temporary structures that had taken over portions of the road and obstructed access for fire tenders and emergency vehicles.
