No need for resolution, PM committed to granting Statehood to J&K: BJP MP Tarun Chugh

BJP leader Tarun Chugh has dismissed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly's recent resolution on statehood as a political distraction by the National Conference. He asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already committed to restoring statehood, rendering the legislative resolution unnecessary.
Why it matters
The statement highlights the ongoing political friction between the BJP and the National Conference regarding the governance and constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir. It underscores the competing narratives over who holds the authority and credit for the region's political transition.
Senior BJP leader and Member of Parliament (MP) Tarun Chugh on Saturday (October 3, 2026) said the Statehood resolution passed by the Omar Abdullah government was an “eyewash”, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi had already promised Statehood for J&K and remains committed”.
Speaking in Jammu after reviewing organisational matters along with BJP national general secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh, Mr. Chugh termed the recent resolution passed by the J&K Assembly as “an attempt by the NC to divert attention from people’s issues”.
“There was no need for a resolution on Statehood. It was done to merely create a shield for NC and Congress’ falling popularity among the people. Statehood has been promised by PM Modi in the Lok Sabha and remains committed to it,” said Mr. Chugh.
