NMC denotifies medical education rules; annual disclosures risk lacking verification
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has denotified its 2023 medical education regulations, effectively removing specific penalties for institutions that fail to meet standards. While annual disclosure requirements remain, the lack of independent verification and clear penalties raises concerns about the quality of medical education.
Why it matters
The removal of enforcement mechanisms could lead to a decline in medical education standards and accountability for institutions failing to pay stipends or maintain infrastructure.
National Medical Commission has denotified the Maintenance of Standards of Medical Education Regulations, 2023. With the denotification, all specific penalties against medical institutions that fail to comply with any of the statutory provisions and regulations or minimum standards are no longer applicable.Any action taken while the regulations were in force would not be affected. However, NMC has not taken any action against many colleges flouting regulations as in the case of non-payment of stipend to MBBS interns and doctors doing PG.
