The parameters used by NIRF broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.
Critics argue that such ranking systems do not measure the quality of teaching and students’ holistic development in these institutions. It also affects the internal functioning of colleges and universities, with certain activities receiving more attention than others. This could compromise academic integrity, as quantity is emphasised over quality. Evaluation of higher education institutions must be reworked to ensure that it aids in improving equity and overall quality of education.
