Police are investigating the killing of a 68-year-old night guard during a suspected break-in at Kinyau Market in Kathiani, Machakos County.
James Ndolo Muia, who worked at a shop in the market, was found dead at around 6:50am by a shopkeeper who had arrived to open his business.
Police officers who visited the scene found Muia’s body lying on the ground, with blood oozing from his head. Police established that three shops at the market had been broken into.
A bar attendant told investigators that she heard screams at around 4am but assumed they were from quarry loaders passing nearby. She then went back to sleep.
Another night guard told police that he had worked with Muia the previous evening. He said Muia complained of a severe headache and left the workplace at around 11pm to go to sleep.
