NHS to use AI to catch undetectable heart disease ‘in blink of an eye’

Researchers at Imperial College London have developed an AI model that can analyze ECG results to detect heart failure and valve disease in seconds. The technology, which is being trialed by the NHS, aims to fast-track high-risk patients for further diagnostic testing.

Regular electrocardiograms (ECGs) will use AI to identify signs of heart failure and heart valve disease that are too subtle for the human eye to detect.
The model is set to be trialled on 590 NHS patients in London and Bristol and could be rolled out nationwide within two years, experts said.
In a study presented at the European Society of Cardiology congress in Munich, the AI-backed “superhuman” ECGs were able to diagnose heart disease “in the blink of an eye”.
