Newcastle United entered the 2026-27 season without European football in its schedule after a turbulent campaign ended with the club in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

Now, a few weeks after a through-and-through summer rebuild, the obvious question is how quickly Matthias Jaissle needs to return the club to continental competition to please PIF and the higher-ups leading the Tyneside club.

According to The Athletic's Chris Waugh , however, Newcastle 's board has not made European qualification essential for financial compliance this season. That said, comments from CFO Simon Capper make clear that where Newcastle finishes will have a major impact on the resources available for next summer.

"We forecast all of them and basically we're good for this season now, subject to anything dramatic happening we're not expecting," Capper said. "What we can spend next summer is based on the different scenarios."
