New Space Race: Why Orbital Sustainability Is A Strategic Imperative
The article discusses the strategic importance of orbital sustainability as space becomes increasingly congested and commercialized. It highlights the need for international cooperation and adherence to guidelines to prevent debris and ensure safe operations.
Why it matters
As space-based infrastructure becomes vital for global telecommunications and security, managing orbital debris is essential for long-term economic and national stability.
Outer space is undergoing a structural transformation. Once associated primarily with scientific exploration and national prestige, it has become an increasingly congested, commercialised, and strategically contested domain. Satellites and space-based services now support telecommunications, navigation, weather forecasting, disaster management, climate monitoring, scientific research, financial transactions, and national development. Consequently, the long-term sustainability of outer space is no longer merely a technical or environmental concern; it has become a strategic imperative linked to economic resilience, national security, crisis stability, and the continuity of critical societal functions.
Space sustainability may be understood as the ability to conduct space activities indefinitely while preserving the orbital environment for present and future generations. The concept encompasses the prevention of orbital debris, the safe and responsible operation of spacecraft, the protection of space-based infrastructure, and equitable access to the benefits of space technology.
