New snake species found in Ethiopia eats only bird eggs

In a recent update, scientists have discovered a new species of snake in Ethiopia's Harenna Forest. At first, they couldn’t believe it’s a new species but as the snake grew, its physical characteristics began to raise questions. Then followed a seven-year investigation which involved field observations, captive breeding, detailed measurements and genetic testing. The research eventually confirmed that the snake represents a previously unknown species.The findings were published in the open-access journal Herpetozoa by researchers Arthur Tiutenko, Tim L. Heller and Michael F. Bates.Name of the snake The new species has been named Dasypeltis albigularis. The common name given to the snake is White-throated Egg-eater. It refers to the pale colour of its throat and the front part of its underside.It was first mistaken for another snakeSo, the discovery story began in 2019.
