Why it matters
Leadership changes in elite military units are critical for national security and the stability of defense operations in the region.
The Special Forces Command (SFC) has conducted a series of handover and takeover ceremonies following recent senior leadership changes within the elite Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) unit.
The major transition saw Lt Col Frank Murema assume command of the 16 Service Brigade after handing over his previous role as Deputy Director of Operations at SFC Headquarters to Lt Col Kaawe.
Presiding over the ceremony, SFC Commander Major General Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru described the 16 Service Brigade as the backbone of the command’s welfare and logistical support system, noting that strong leadership, teamwork and unity would be essential in sustaining its contribution to SFC operations.
Maj Gen Nyakikuru commended the outgoing Brigade Commander, Col Tugume, for his dedication and leadership in guiding one of SFC’s most demanding formations. Col Tugume has since proceeded for a course at the National Defence College-Uganda.
