New regulations on flags flown at Alberta schools to take effect in January

The Alberta government has introduced new regulations requiring schools to fly only the Canadian and Alberta flags, aiming to remove political or ideological messaging from classrooms. Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides stated the move is intended to keep learning environments neutral and focused on student success.
Why it matters
This policy reflects a growing trend in North American education politics regarding the role of social and political symbols in public institutions.
The new Flag Display Regulation establishes what the province says are "clear and consistent rules" to ensure that "learning environments remain focused on student learning and success."
"If there's a type of flag that has a political messaging or ideological statements or things of that nature, it simply wouldn't be permitted because its primary purpose, ultimately, would be to advance a social or political cause," Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides told CBC News in an interview.
"We want to ensure that that's kept out of the classroom, and students are allowed to form their own opinions on controversial topics," he said.
