New magnetic-particle test detects amoxicillin allergy with 98% sensitivity
Researchers have developed a new blood test using magnetic particles that identifies amoxicillin allergies with 98% sensitivity, significantly outperforming current diagnostic methods. This could prevent the mislabeling of patients and reduce the unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antibiotics.

A new blood testing platform could make it easier to identify people who are genuinely allergic to amoxicillin, one of the most widely used penicillin antibiotics. Researchers tested 30 nanometre magnetic particles on blood samples from 94 people, including 50 patients with confirmed amoxicillin allergy and 44 who tolerated the drug. The experimental system detected allergic patients with 98 percent sensitivity, while the commonly used ImmunoCAP commercial test detected only about 17 percent in the same comparison. As reported by Phys.org, the technology uses tiny iron oxide particles coated with silica and molecular structures designed to capture allergy-related antibodies.
