Nepal flood: Rescue efforts hampered by thick mud, victims trapped in tunnels

KATHMANDU: Nepal's military has stepped up search and rescue operations after the devastating flash flood in the Himalayas, but has faced major challenges, including thick layers of mud and people trapped in mountain tunnels.
Army spokesman Raja Ram Basnet said the mud was making it difficult for helicopters to land and take off in affected areas, including Temure, Syabrubesi and Mailung.
According to German news agency dpa, Basnet said fourteen rescue helicopters were currently operating in the region, and rescue efforts had been intensified.
Nepal's disaster management authority previously said more than 4,400 people had been rescued as of Friday (Aug 28) evening.
