NDA wins 34 of 42 Silchar Municipal Corporation seats

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance scored a landslide victory in the first Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) election, bagging 34 of 42 seats or wards on Tuesday (October 6, 2026).
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked the people of Silchar, southern Assam’s economic hub where the BJP found its first foothold in the northeast, for reposing their faith in the party.
“The outcome reflects the importance people attach to development, peace, connectivity, empowerment and better governance,” he said at the State party headquarters in Guwahati after the results came in.
According to the result charts released by the election authorities, the BJP won 32 seats, two of them—Ward 9 and Ward 20—uncontested. Its ally Asom Gana Parishad won two.
