National Handloom Day to be observed in Erode on August 7

The Erode District Handlooms Department is organizing events to celebrate National Handloom Day on August 7. The program includes exhibitions, fashion shows, and medical camps to support local weavers and promote the handloom sector.

The Erode District Handlooms Department will organise a series of programmes on August 7 to mark the 12th National Handloom Day.
Collector S. Kandasamy in a release said the National Handloom Day is observed every year to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement on August 7, 1905, and to highlight the contribution of the handloom sector to the country’s socio-economic development, while recognising the role of handloom weavers. The first National Handloom Day was celebrated in Chennai on August 7, 2015.
A special handloom exhibition-cum-sale will be held at the District Collectorate on August 7 and 8. Chennimalai bedsheets, bedspreads, pillow covers, towels, Bhavani Jamakkalams , cotton and soft silk sarees, curtains and mats will be sold at a 20% discount offered by the State government.
