National Council approves Mental Health Bill
The Namibian National Council has passed the Mental Health Bill of 2025, which replaces outdated legislation from 1973. The new law aims to modernize mental health care by emphasizing community-based services and protecting patient rights.

The National Council has reviewed and passed the Mental Health Bill (no. 8 of 2025) without amendments.
“The Bill now stands confirmed by the National Council and will be referred by the Speaker of the National Assembly to the President to enable the President to deal with it under Articles 56 and 64 of the Namibian Constitution,” the National Council explained.
The approval of the Bill marked the conclusion of the Second Ordinary Session of the Seventh National Council on Friday, 28 August 2026.
