NEW YORK – Namibia is backing the creation of a global “Ocean Eye” alliance to help countries share scientific information and early warnings as climate change threatens marine resources and the livelihoods that depend on it.

The proposed alliance emerged from a high-level discussion on the Sustainable Ocean Economy attended by Namibian representatives at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, according to Inge Zaamwani, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform Minister.

The minister said the initiative would bring countries together to share scientific research, knowledge and findings so that governments can make better decisions about how to manage and protect their oceans.

The initiative comes as coastal countries are already experiencing changes in their marine environments, including warmer waters and declining oxygen levels, which are affecting fish and other marine resources.
