Namakkal Corporation asks commercial establishments to get trade licences
The Namakkal Corporation has issued a 15-day ultimatum for local commercial establishments to obtain mandatory trade licences. Failure to comply will result in the sealing of businesses, as the corporation enforces local urban body regulations.
Why it matters
It illustrates local government efforts to formalize the economy and increase municipal revenue through regulatory compliance.
The Namakkal Corporation instructed commercial establishments to obtain trade licences within 15 days, failing which the shops will be sealed.
The licence grants legal permission to carry out a specific commercial or industrial trade within the corporation’s jurisdiction.
According to the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Rules 2023, all micro, small, medium, and large enterprises, as well as all types of other commercial and business establishments, are required to obtain a trade licence from the corporation. The fee for the trade licence ranges between ₹1,000 and ₹40,000, based on the space and type of the business. The validity of the trade licence is one year.
