Preliminary reports indicate that the protests, which reportedly began at around 6pm and continued past midnight, were staged by a group of boda boda riders protesting the death of one of their colleagues.
Chaos intensified after the protesters blocked the road leading from the Nairobi Expressway exit, leaving motorists stranded as traffic built up in the area.
There were also reports of motorists being stopped and robbed during the demonstrations, with witnesses claiming some protesters were armed with crude weapons.
